Well, I was out today with Tina's cousin Mike and Barry hunting rabbits. I know, I know, another hunting story...Anyway, Adam had to work today so it was just the three of us and the two beagles. Barry's dog is about 2 and has never been trained to hunt. We have been out with him a couple of times and with no luck. He really liked to hunt the squirrels and was quite gun shy. Today we had Tina's cousin Mike with us and he brought his hunting dog turbo. The day got off to a very slow start took awhile for turbo to get going but he finally started one and pretty much didn't stop all day. This was Barry's first time out hunting rabbit with a trained beagle and was quite impressed. The second rabbit of the day came out and not knowing that anyone else could see it I took aim. Well, little did I know that Mike and Barry had a bead on the rabbit as well. Mike shot first which triggered me, then Barry followed a split second later. We all had our finger on the trigger waiting for a shot. Let's just say that we can all get credit for the kill, it's a good thing we were 10-15 yards away when we fired or there would have been no rabbit left.
I am still in shock at all the rabbits that are back there. We shot 5 between the 3 of us, we could have had more if we had stayed longer. We had to call Turbo off a rabit because we ended up too close to the houses.
Derk(Barry's Dog) did ok yesterday. He was not quite sure what he was supposed to do but he was a sniffing fool. He was all over the place looking. He followed Turbo on the first rabbit and kept up for awhile. The dogs got into a little tuffle over the first rabbit. Toward the end of the day we were wondering if Derkl was going to catch on when he started yelping on and off for a couple of seconds. Then he bolted after something, which we could only assume was a rabbit, at full howl and stayed on it for about 15-20 minutes before we decided we had to get going.
All in all, a good day. Needless to say, Adam was quite upset having missed a great opportunity to hunt with an experienced hunting dog. It will be a little while before we go out again, but if you like rabbit meat, let me know, I think I can get you some!
